Sylvia von Hartmann was born and brought up in Hamburg, and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1963-66. She has taught at Coventry College of Art, but has spent most of her time in Scotland since then. Her unusual handling of concentrated colour, together with her evocative imagery, has brought her to a wide and appreciative audience. She has been elected RSW, SSA and SSWA; and her work is in numerous collections including the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
