The artist's love for nature transpires from every single aspects of this painting. The light, the trees, the sky, the colours - everything contributes to form an harmonic landscape. There is a sense of desolation, of course, but there's no sadness in this painting and man's presence seems almost unnecessary.
Mary Paton (1920-1990) was born in Ayrshire. She studied at Edinburgh College of Art under Gillies, McTaggart and Rosoman. The artist spent most of her later life living near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire and the landscape in this area inspired many of her painting, including gardens and floral and bird studies.
