This picture, of Samuel Beckett directing rehearsals for his play Waiting for Godot, cleverly highlights the theatricality of its subject-matter by its bold and unconventional back-lit back-view of the celebrated dramatist. Primarily known as a fine portrait painter with work at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Tom Phillips is also celebrated for his innovative work in television, opera, translation (translating Dante's Inferno) and as a music columnist. This picture was gifted by the Sylvia Stevenson Trust.
