This painting mainly consists of large swathes of black, grey, white and blue colours, giving an almost abstract appearance. The foreground is black under the lowering storm clouds, but in the middle distance the clear sky beyond shows as a band of mainly white paint. Traces of gold and red appear in the midst of the storm, as well as a small patch of green suggesting a hill.
Carol McDermott has been described as "a lyrical painter, inspired by the beautiful wild countryside of Cumbria". Carol says of this particular painting, "Often, standing on the fell, I would watch the weather coming in, squalls with light showing behind."
Carol studied at City and Guilds of London Art School from 1988 to 1991.
