Stephen Cohn 1931 - 2012
Part of the Stephen and Laura's collection of artworks, donated to Art in Healthcare. Stephen Cohn was born in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1931. In 1933 he came to England with his parents. On leaving school he served in the Royal Artillery and then studied sculpture, first at Hammersmith School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art.
He has taught in Colleges of Art and has written and lectured in Fine Art. His working life has been divided between sculpture, painting, printmaking, and writing.
Cohn’s three volumes of translations of Rilke’s poetry and prose are published in the UK by Carcanet Press and in the USA by Northwestern University Press and by Routledge (Duino Elegies, 1989; New Poems, 1992; Sonnets to Orpheus with Letters to a Young Poet, 2000). He has given talks on his Rilke translations at Boston and New York Universities and at New College, Oxford.
