Alan Alexander (1936-1996)
This painting highlights the natural abstraction that we all experience in the dark, when things don’t always seem quite right. The colours of dark purples and blues add to the night time setting of the work. The painting has a very dreamy quality popular with surrealist artists; the ornate cup sits almost dead centre with an abstracted horse on the right and a more realistic shadowy horse on the right. The bold and abrasive areas of red draw the eye through the scene.
