The Peacock and the Owl
Nonsense poem – illustrated with a tissue paper collage peacock and a quilled owl (audio recording 1 min 26 secs).
Sometimes my imagination can be a positive place, full of silly and playful ideas. Art and writing both tap into that playful place of escapism from the real world. One week my tutor suggested “peacocks” as inspiration, and I made this glittery tissue paper collage peacock. Earlier in the year, for the “Life in 2020” Exhibition I made 15 different owls for one of my artworks. I wondered what might happen if the owls and the peacocks were to get together… So I wrote a nonsense poem based on a peacock and owl, and had fun playing with words and rhyme and rhythm.
Cherry Blossom Tree
Felting with embroidery, beads and buttons.
I made this cherry blossom tree using wet felting in my Room For Art group last year. I find wet felting a tactile and soothing technique. I’ve always loved pink cherry blossom in springtime. This year, during lockdown I did a lot of walking in my local park, and the pink cherry blossoms would really brighten my day. This piece of art represents those walks in the park, with the pink blossom, blue sky, sunshine and birds – it’s a little piece of springtime to hold on to now we are in winter, and the trees are bare.
