Lin’s Mill
Acrylic on paper

The painting is of Lin’s Mill Aqueduct near Ratho, where the Union Canal crosses the River Almond. There’s an expanse of flat stones along the riverbank, where you can walk out to enjoy great views of the aqueduct and skim stones upstream towards Almondell. I’d gone down there to do some sketching, take photographs, and to escape the claustrophobia of the first weeks of lockdown. This was a huge relief at the time; I remember a powerful feeling of being nourished by the fresh air and the open space.

I began work on the painting the following day, using the photographs I’d taken as a reference.
