John Bellany | Madonna of the Bass Rock, Watercolour, 1997

This watercolour depicts the Bass Rock off the coast of North Berwick, which showcases the artist’s vigorous approach to figurative art.

Whilst on display in an Edinburgh hospital, a visitor to the hospital commented on the powerful impact this artwork had on them: “It was Bellany’s Madonna of the Bass Rock that stopped me and had me look at all the corridor paintings properly. I suddenly felt much more human. Much less defined by my injury.”
