Adrian Wiszniewski | Fruit on a Slice of Lemon, Acrylic on Canvas, 1997

This artwork was commissioned specifically for a hospital environment, prompting the artist to select fruit as the subject because “there is something metaphorically about fruit and growth and development that is a good emblem for hospitals”.

Despite being briefed against using black due the perception of it as a ‘depressing’ colour, Adrian Wiszniewski nevertheless chose to include it in this piece – as he believed that some of the most uplifting paintings, he had seen used black.
