Art in Healthcare is a Scottish charity. We work to improve health and wellbeing for individuals and communities by providing opportunities to experience and engage with high quality visual art, artists and creativity, particularly within community, health and social care settings. Artist Remit
We are looking for an Artist to work with the Art in Healthcare team to develop and deliver a pilot project Making It Better, from August 2023 to December 2023. Working in partnership with NHS Fife we will be testing how best to provide meaningful creative opportunities for adults in ward settings within Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

The project will involve a number of stages including research with staff and patients, the development and delivery of creative programmes in ward settings and gathering documentation and evaluation. This project will also make use of our large art collection and support will be provided by Art in Healthcare’s Curator.

We anticipate that the project will break down as follows: Research – 2/3 days
Development of activity programmes – 4 days
Delivery of creative activity programmes – 8 days Evaluation/Reporting – 2 days

This role will require you to have excellent creative and facilitation skills as well as strong coordination and project management skills. Your time will be spent coordinating, developing, delivering and documenting the strands of this project. You will be supported by the wider Art in Healthcare team with project administration. We have the facility to provide evaluation expertise and support, as required. You will be part of a community of artists that deliver programmes of participatory activity for us and as such will have access to peer support, supervision and training.

We are looking for someone who has experience of using visual art to support the health and wellbeing of adults. We particularly welcome applications from individuals with relevant lived experience. We will ask you to:

  • Work with the Art in Healthcare team to ensure that your approach is in line with our ethos and policies.
  • Connect with key staff at NHS Fife to co-ordinate aspects of the project.
  • Have an approach that is responsive and flexible, responding to changing needs and being able to use learning to reshape the offer for participants.
  • Be committed to documenting sessions and to your own critical reflection during the delivery phases.
  • Work with the Administrator to order materials, coordinate logistics etc.
  • Work with the finance team to ensure that all invoices are processed in a timely fashion.
  • Work with the Curator to establish ways of introducing the collection to participants.
  • Support the dissemination of learning from the project. Person Specification

  • Extensive experience [5+ years] of using visual art as a tool to support the health and wellbeing of adults.
  • Has experience of healthcare settings and understands the possibilities and challenges presented by ward environments.
  • An interest in the broader work of Art in Healthcare and an understanding of how art can be used to address health inequalities.
  • An interest in working with our collection and collection team.
  • Experience of developing and facilitating visual art workshops in-person in a range of different materials, with mixed-ability participants.
  • Experience of codesign.
  • Strong administration and project management skills.
  • Great communication and listening skills.
  • Experience of documentation and evaluation.
  • Ability to work independently but also to make use of the wider team, as and when needed.

Terms and Conditions
The opportunity is for approximately sixteen days to be worked flexibly, to meet the needs of the individual and organisation, between August and December 2023.

We will pay a rate of £336.00 per working day [7.5 hours]. As a temporary, freelance member of the team you will be responsible for your tax and national insurance contributions. Payment will be made within 30 calendar days of an invoice. Additional funding is available to support travel and art materials.

We will require the successful applicant to evidence their right to work in the UK. We will also require a PVG Certificate and will work with you to secure this from Disclosure Scotland.

We support remote working and have office space in central Edinburgh. You will be required to undertake research and deliver in-person workshops in Dunfermline, Fife.
