Gillian is interested in layering paint, particularly enjoying the diffusion which occurs when transparent layers are placed on top of one another. She may sometimes scratch back through the layers to reveal earlier work or colour.

We are drawn to the layered texture and quality of this work. The intense blue is gently broken up by the pink, purple and green tones underneath, while the blurred horizontal stripe throughout the painting creates an almost rippled effect. The title Undercurrent could relate to a current of water below the surface, moving in different direction from any surface current. Or perhaps the definition that suggests having a hidden opinion, feeling or trend often different to one publically shared.
