Kenneth Dingwall was born in Devonside, Clackmannanshire, Scotland in 1938. He began his career in painting at the Edinburgh College of Art, from 1955-1960, also attending at Athens School of Fine Art in 1961. Between 1985 and 1987, he travelled to The Cleveland Institute of Art as a visiting foreign artist, where he stayed to become chair of the painting department.

He returned to Scotland in 2003 to paint full-time and has now produced a vast collection of large-scale abstract paintings, which he exhibits around the world. Despite being involved in the art scene for years, he is “unconcerned with art world fads and trends”. In many of his paintings such as ’Black’, ‘Edinburgh Blue’, ‘Black Bleeding’, ‘Open’ and ‘Calm’ he captures abstract concepts through minimalist, structured and efficient means. His colour palette is of a limited range, using red, black, blue and grey.

Kenneth is inspired by the pioneers of Modernism such as Mondrian, Malevich and Barnett Newman, who all incorporated the psychological and metaphysical into their works of art. Like them he focuses on achieving ‘symmetry, order and balance’. He takes a lot of his subject matter from nature, making the ‘organic’ and the ‘spiritual’ come together. The patterns which appear to grow and glow from his works represent the shift of sunlight or the solidity of a landscape, exploring what is hidden underneath the surface.
