This piece shows a high-attitude village overlooking Valle Tirana in Spain. It views the village from above, showing its overall form like an archaeological find.
Janet Swailes works as a landscape architect, illustrator and interpreter. She has practised as an artist printmaker since 1995 and has studied at Edinburgh Printmakers and at Marburg University.
She has worked in Italy studying long distance transhumance routes and at the Art Centre and print workshop at Taigh Chearsabhagh at Lochmaddy on North Uist, where she created prints based on the ancient sites of the Outer Hebrides.
Janet currently lives and works in the Pennines, drawing inspiration from the landscapes there. She is interested in the structures and patterns of natural and cultural landscapes, and all of her work is developed from sketching outside. She is currently undertaking a part time practice-based PhD in field sketching at Edinburgh College of Art.
